Red Dwarf is a Jupiter Mining ship. Lister, one of the crew members, brought a cat on board. Lister went into status, he returned to find the ship abandoned, the crew dead and just him, a revived human life form of cat, and a hologramic simulation of his bunk mate, Rimmer.
They went on with their journeys, their travels, trying to get back to earth. They picked up Kryten along the way, and Kochanski.
The ship blew up, and they survived with their sub-ship, StarBug.
